The Instituto de Energía Solar (IES) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the modelling of photovoltaic (PV) systems, as part of a Spanish R&D project focused on the integration of machine learning with solar energy technologies. This PhD position is available within the project MCRUST (Mantle-Crust Recycling Under Study and Testing), led by Prof. Antonio Castro. MCRUST is a multidisciplinary initiative in Earth Sciences (solid Earth) that integrates high-pressure petrological experiments, geochemistry, and thermomechanical geodynamic modelling to investigate magma generation linked to crust–mantle recycling and crustal growth.

The central hypothesis is that significant interactions between the crust and mantle are essential to explain the observed compositions of magmas in regions of new continental crust generation. The PhD research will address this gap through the study of Archean and Paleoproterozoic rocks within the North Atlantic craton in Scotland, via a combination of field, geochemical, experimental and geodynamic work.

We welcome applications from highly motivated candidates with a background in Earth Sciences and interests in igneous petrology, geochemistry, experimental petrology, or geodynamics. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment, joining an international team with members from different institutions, including CSIC (Spain), University of Portsmouth (UK), ETH-Zürich (Switzerland), Universidade de Évora (Portugal) and the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (China).

The role of the successful applicant will potentially include:

• Field work and sampling of relevant geological areas for new crust generation.
• Sample preparation for geochemical and isotopic analyses.
• Laboratory high-pressure experiments (piston-cylinder) and analysis of experimental results via EMPA and LA-ICP-MS.
• Processing of existing geochemical and experimental data.
• Programming and conducting of geodynamic numerical experiments.
• Preparation of at least three manuscripts as first author to be published in peer-reviewed journals (requisite for PhD defense).
• Further result dissemination through presentations at national and international conferences.
• Participation in team meetings and workshops.

The specific methodology and work plan will be personally tailored for the successful PhD candidate according to its experience from MSc thesis.

The following profile is expected for applicants:

• MSc degree in solid Earth sciences in the fields of petrology, geochemistry or geodynamics.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Strong academic performance.
• Coding skills in MATLAB (C also desirable).

• Proficiency or willingness to learn Spanish language.
• Background in any of the work fields within the objectives (field work, laboratory, geochemistry or isotopic geochemistry).
• Experience with electron-microprobe data acquisition and processing.

PhD Position on High-Performance Germanium Thermophotovoltaic Cells

SCOPE

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems —which convert electromagnetic radiation emitted by high-temperature sources into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells— have seen a resurgence in recent years. One of the most promising new applications of TPV technology is in electricity storage via thermal batteries, enabling surplus energy from intermittent renewable sources to be stored and used on demand. The PhD project proposed herein aims to design, fabricate, and characterize GaAs / Ge heterojunction TPV cells, with the goal of surpassing the world efficiency record recently achieved by our group. By integrating key technological innovations, this work also seeks to explore the full potential of Ge converters for powering the first generation of TPV-based thermal batteries.

REQUIREMENTS

• A Master’s degree in physics, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Materials Science, or similar degrees
• Knowledge on semiconductor physics and electronic device physics.
• Experience in eptiaxial growth, and / or cleanroom operation, and / or semiconductor characterization.
• Programming skills are highly desirable.
• Good academic record
• Great motivation for scientific work and ability for teamwork
• Full proficiency in English and basic knowledge of Spanish (or commitment to get it!).
• Starting date no later than October 2025.

The Group of Quantum Information and Quantum Computation of Complutense University of Madrid is offering a predoctoral research position to undertake a PhD in theory of open quantum systems, decoherence, and quantum thermodynamics.

The project is oriented toward researching the dynamics and thermodynamics of strongly open quantum systems, which are systems that interact strongly with their environment. Specifically, it aims to develop efficient methods to describe the dynamics of these systems—where standard perturbative techniques are inadequate—and to formulate new thermodynamic laws within this context.

We seek a candidate with:
- A solid background in theoretical physics and mathematics.
- Preferable knowledge in quantum mechanics, quantum information, quantum field theory, statistical mechanics, or related areas.
- A strong academic record, motivation, and interest in learning and contributing in a multidisciplinary research environment.

PhD Position on High-Performance Germanium Thermophotovoltaic Cells

SCOPE

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems —which convert electromagnetic radiation emitted by high-temperature sources into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells— have seen a resurgence in recent years. One of the most promising new applications of TPV technology is in electricity storage via thermal batteries, enabling surplus energy from intermittent renewable sources to be stored and used on demand. The PhD project proposed herein aims to design, fabricate, and characterize GaAs / Ge heterojunction TPV cells, with the goal of surpassing the world efficiency record recently achieved by our group. By integrating key technological innovations, this work also seeks to explore the full potential of Ge converters for powering the first generation of TPV-based thermal batteries.

REQUIREMENTS

• A Master’s degree in physics, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Materials Science, or similar degrees
• Knowledge on semiconductor physics and electronic device physics.
• Experience in eptiaxial growth, and / or cleanroom operation, and / or semiconductor characterization.
• Programming skills are highly desirable.
• Good academic record
• Great motivation for scientific work and ability for teamwork
• Full proficiency in English and basic knowledge of Spanish (or commitment to get it!).
• Starting date no later than October 2025.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

• The selected candidate would start her / his PhD in our group, hired from a research project, with an expected duration of 4 years.
• The gross salary will be equivalent to an official Spanish PhD fellowship
• Excellent experimental infrastructure and international atmosphere.
• Attendance to scientific conferences worldwide
• Research stays in partner labs in Europe, Japan or the USA
